Eyes are one of the most important parts of our body. Good eyesight helps you perform well. Regular care and few important steps are all you need to follow to maintain your vision at its best.

Below are some steps which help you to take care of your eyes naturally:

Eat a balanced diet:

Your eyes have their own unique set of nutritional needs. Vitamins A, C, and E, as well as the mineral zinc, contain antioxidants that can help prevent macular degeneration. It’s a condition in which the macula — the part of the eye that controls central vision —deteriorates.

An inadequate intake of antioxidants, consumption of alcohol or saturated fats may create free-radical reactions that can harm the macula – the central part of the retina. High-fat diets can also cause deposits that constrict blood flow in the arteries. The eyes are especially sensitive to this, given the small size of the blood vessels that feed them.

Here are some nutrient-rich foods which boost eye health:
 Fish, beef and eggs
 Nuts, legumes and seeds
 Green, leafy vegetables
 Citrus fruits
 Carrots, sweet potato

Get a regular eye check up:

Getting an eye exam is simple and painless — and it’s the single best thing you can do for your eye health!

Even if your eyes feel healthy, you could have a problem and not know it. That’s because many eye diseases don’t have any symptoms or warning signs. Getting a regular check up allows you to identify any problems early and get better treatment.

Follow the 20-20-20 rule:

You’re probably using digital devices for hours each day at work and at home. These devices are exposing your eyes to high energy blue light. It’s called blue light because the wavelengths emitted are near the bluer part of the spectrum.

To ease the strain, follow the 20-20-20 rule. That means every 20 minutes, you should stop staring at your computer and look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Wear Sunglasses:

Protect your eyes from the sun by wearing sunglasses — even on cloudy days! Be sure to look for sunglasses that block 99 to 100 percent of both UVA and UVB radiation. Also, wearing a hat with a brim will greatly reduce the amount of UV radiation slipping around the side of your sunglasses.

Get a good night’s sleep:

Your eyes are working all day and just like your body, your eyes require proper rest. You will feel the difference when you get the sleep you need – and good rest will support the health of your eyes.

Quit Smoking/Don’t smoke:

You know smoking is bad for your lungs and your heart, but it is also equally injurious for your eyes. Smoking dramatically raises your risk of developing cataracts and age-related macular degeneration.

Keep your hands and lenses clean:

Washing your hands and keeping them clean is so important when it comes to eyes, especially if you are a contact lens user. Your eyes are more vulnerable to germs and infections. Even things that just irritate your eyes can affect your vision. Before you touch your eye, wash your hand with a mild soap and before wearing contact lenses, disinfect them as instructed.

Bottom line, living a healthier lifestyle, protecting your eyes from the sun and foreign objects and a regular check up can help in reducing risk of developing a problem that could hurt your vision.
