Did you know diabetes is a disease that has fatality rates higher than cancer?
Here are four things that most people don’t know about diabetes.
Fact 1: About one third of all people with diabetes do not know they have the disease.
True. Only about one in eight people with so-called pre-diabetes, often a precursor to full-blown disease, know they have a problem. The researchers also found that undiagnosed diabetes were about 70 percent more common in men than in women.
Fact 2: Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness in working-age adults.
Diabetic eye disease comprises a group of eye conditions that affect people with diabetes. These conditions include diabetic retinopathy, diabetic macular edema (DME), cataract, and glaucoma. It was found that all forms of diabetic eye disease have the potential to cause severe vision loss and blindness. Diabetic retinopathy is the most common cause of vision loss among people with diabetes and a leading cause of blindness among working-age adults. Also, diabetic retinopathy often goes unnoticed until vision loss occurs, people with diabetes should get a comprehensive dilated eye exam at least once a year.
Fact 3: Diabetes isn’t caused by eating too much sugar.
We all know the stereotype – if you’ve got diabetes, you must have eaten too much sugar. But, that isn’t the truth. There are two main types of diabetes – Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. In Type 1 diabetes, the insulin producing cells in your pancreas are destroyed by your immune system. No amount of sugar in your diet – or anything in your lifestyle – has caused or can cause you to get Type 1 diabetes. With Type 2 diabetes, though we know sugar doesn’t directly causes Type 2 diabetes, you are more likely to get it if you are overweight. You gain weight when you take in more calories than your body needs, and sugary foods and drinks contain a lot of calories.
Fact 4: There is also a third type of diabetes – Gestational Diabetes
Gestational diabetes is a type of diabetes that occurs only during pregnancy. Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood glucose (sugar) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. According to a 2014 analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of gestational diabetes is as high as 9.2%.
