Whether emotional or physical, we have all fallen prey to stress and anxiety at some point in our lives. Some of us even deal with it on a regular basis. The good news is, there are ways to reduce it.

What is stress?

It’s a state of emotional strain resulting from demanding circumstances, hectic schedules, sudden information and mounting responsibilities. It hinders your efficiency, increases the chances of falling sick often and keeps you in a grumpy mood always.

So, if you feel stressed, take solace in the fact that that you’re not alone. Here are 7 ways to combat stress and keep your mind and body calm.

  1. De-clutter the space you constantly engage with. It is important to have a keep you home as well as office desk tidy and organised. If you’re too disorganized, everything competes for your attention and makes it hard to think or work.
  2. Take a power nap. Find a good spot and keep it short to 20-30 minutes. Research shows that you can make yourself more alert, reduce stress, and improve cognitive functioning with a nap.
  3. Follow a routine. When our daily routine is well structured, we can utilize our day in a better and relaxed way.
  4. Start your day early. As the saying goes, “early to bed and early to rise, makes a man, healthy wealthy and wise”. Wake up early in the morning is not just healthy for your body but is also beneficial in improving mental health.
  5. Quit smoking and over drinking. Turning to alcohol or cigarettes for relaxing can only make it worse. If you feel under pressure, talk about it to a friend or loved one and try to tackle the cause of the stress.
  6. Eat mood-boosting foods including fresh fruits, greens, vegetables, decaf hot drinks and whole foods. Clear out your kitchen off unhealthy staples.
  7. Keep your sugar levels in check. Soybeans, dark chocolate, bananas and avocado are all good sources of magnesium, which helps with efficient energy production. It also has the power to calm your nervous system. Also, Ensure you have a small meal every 2-3 hours that contains protein.
  8. Sleep. Getting enough a necessity to our health. It helps to restore the mind-body system and strengthen our immune system. A lack of restful sleep not only exposes the human body to poor health, but can lead to worsening anxiety and depression.
  9. Accept and face your challenges. If you find yourself in a demanding situation, find a solution for it instead of stressing. When you accept your challenges, it has a positive impact on your mind and consciousness. This makes you stronger.
  10. Meditate and relax. Meditation is an excellent method of cleansing your mind from all negative and stressing thoughts. It will help you to relax, refresh and think positive.
  11. Practice self-compassion. Acknowledge and accept the reality and who you are. Extend the same kind of compassion to ourselves that we would to a good friend in our situation. Distance yourself from negative self-talk.
